After extensive preparatory work, the archaeological fieldwork of the Department of Archaeology at the Hungarian University of Applied Sciences, in collaboration with the Bálint Balassa Museum of the Hungarian National Museum in Esztergom, began in the spring of 2014 in the Pusztamarót Valley. This valley conceals the remains of a significant medieval settlement in Gerecse, located near the royal and archbishop’s court of Esztergom.
The first season involved both archaeological excavations and geodetic and geophysical surveys as part of the department’s spring field exercises. As always, the base of our operations was in Bajna, the center of our research in the region.
We would like to express our gratitude to the Castle Museum of the Hungarian National Museum (MNM), the Bálint Balassa Museum, and Dr. Edit Tari for their support. Special thanks also go to Dr. István Horváth, Director of the Museum, and Péter Solt, geologist at the Hungarian Geological Institute, for their invaluable professional assistance. Additionally, we appreciate the enthusiastic participation of our colleagues and students from Pázmány Péter Catholic University. We would like to extend our heartfelt thanks to the municipality of Bajna and the Süttő and Bajna Forestry for their warm hospitality.
